A new kind of news organisation is about to come to New York City.
The new York Times is a hybrid news organisation with digital platforms and traditional print formats.
The Times is to begin offering news to the public on a free-to-use platform.
The paper will launch its website in the next few weeks and will make its first-ever paid content available to the general public on Monday, the Times said in a statement.
New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet said in an interview with Bloomberg that the digital platform would help readers to access the news they need more quickly and cheaply.
“The new paper will provide a platform that people will use across multiple platforms, allowing them to get the most out of their online time,” he said.
“In doing so, we are going to be a model for the rest of the world, which is going to see this kind of innovation in the digital space.”
The digital platform will allow readers to find out what news is going on and get to the stories they are interested in.
The Times said its goal was to become “the leading global news source for people around the world”.
In a statement, the newspaper said it was committed to continuing to deliver the highest quality of journalism and to providing a platform for readers to get to know the news of the day in the most effective way possible.
It added that it planned to make the New Yorker digital platform available in the coming weeks.
The launch of the NewYorkTimes.com website is the first of its kind, and the first major digital publication to offer free news for its readers.
The site, which will launch on Monday and be accessible to anyone who wants to access it, will be a new, open-source platform that will provide an alternative to newspapers that charge users for access to news content.
The newspaper will offer a free digital service to all New Yorkers, offering the most comprehensive news coverage, news aggregation, video and audio and features from more than 250 news organisations.
The website will also feature articles from local newspapers and news websites.
Users will be able to search for a specific topic or story and then read it directly, without having to go through the paper’s newsroom.
“We’re excited to bring the Times to people around this country and around the globe,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in the statement.
“As our digital ecosystem continues to grow, the new Times of New York will give readers access to the most relevant and up-to‑date information, at no cost.
We believe this is a major opportunity for the digital world to better inform New Yorkers and New Yorkers around the planet.”
The Times of the future is not yet certain.
However, Mr Baquet has indicated the paper will continue to work with digital media companies, such as the New Media Consortium, to ensure that the paper can continue to deliver news that is “relevant to the world at large”.
In his interview with Reuters last week, Mr de Blasio called on New York to launch a free newspaper, saying it would be the best way to help New Yorkers understand what is happening in the world.
“I would love to see a free New York newspaper,” Mr de, who has also previously called for a national newspaper, said.
